Construction is in progress at the prototype Passive House!

Construction is in progress at Studio III Architecture’s prototype Passive House! As the foundations get their finishing touches, we reflect on how reality can force upon us design choices we wouldn’t otherwise expect. The original design called for screw pile foundations drilled into the soil as a way to float the main volume above the ground and reduce our carbon footprint by avoiding the use of concrete. Instead, bedrock covers almost all of our buildable area. And so we welcome concrete into our home, whether we want to or not. But at least no one can accuse us of building our house on sand.

Studio III architects’ Hero Wednesday: Terrance Haynes

Terrance Hayes could have been so many things….I’m sure we’ll never know half of them, but he could have been a professional basketball player, or a fine arts painter, but rather by chance, he became a poet…..

His poetry is amazing and reminds me of architecture…in that it chases and touches all the themes of our lives without us really knowing it. I like poetry but must admit I couldn’t tell you when I last sat down and read a poem. When I stumbled upon Mr. Hayes reading a poem of his recently…I thought…wow that was incredible.

Check him out!

Studio III architects’ Hero Wednesday: What is Architecture?

What is architecture?

There are MANY ways to explain it… but this little video does an exceptionally good job of illustrating what it is and why it’’s important. Bjarke Ingels’ “Worldcraft” is an inspiring and important reminder for architects, but more importantly, a message for people who wonder “what is architecture?”.

Studio III architects’ Hero Wednesday: Clean These Rivers?!

“Clean these rivers?!” a question or an exclamation…?
This is an amazing idea…to clean New York Cities Hudson and East River….to the extent that you could swim in them?!
Yes, check out Archie, Jeff and Dong’s idea for a public, floating, swimming pool that actually cleans the river.

The project also spotlights the idea that Designers can and should launch ideas to benefit our communities…because that is what we are trained to do but are rarely given the opportunity….because we usually have a client whose ideas come first.

The idea of the Designers as client is amazing. Initiating a project to solve a community or environmental issue, exploring and developing ideas and solutions from a sophisticated professional perspective with community and environmental wellbeing at the heart can have amazing results.

The question I have is how do they keep the lights on and the rent paid?! Seriously, how do you do that part?

Studio III architects’ Hero Wednesday: Jacque Fresco’s “Venus Project”

As usual, this post is about something interesting…not declarations of truth or heroics (most of the time).

Jacque Fresco and his “Venus Project” looks to fix the world…that’s all….very Utopian. It’s good to have a dose of Utopia every so often!

Jacque Fresco

Fresco sees the abuse and misuse of technology, government and business and the threats they have imposed on our world. He puts forth solutions, some naive and some practical (…all with the next generation of problems for sure). His dialog is by far more moving then his architecture and engineering.  I would have to say its Jacques Fresco’s concern for our future and view of the problems we face the most interesting.  It’s a long video but very interesting and, yup, can be categorized under any number of titles ranging from Brilliant to Crazy….but which ever camp you hale from…it’s a valuable and interesting body of thought.

Studio III architects’ Hero Wednesday: Louis Zamperini

Who is Louis Zamperini, and why his is a true Hero? Well the BEST telling of his story is in the book Unbroken…definitely give this a read! Truly amazing and far beyond what these video links can convey. Mr. Zamperini died on Wednesday July 2nd 2014.

The ordeal of surviving the pacific;
The ordeal of the prison camp; (there is a terrible screeching sound in the last 3 seconds of the video…it’s not your speakers…just a bad production issue)
Life after the Bird;
