Studio III architects’ Hero Wednesday: The Park Passive House

The Park Passive house by NK Architects is a great example of the potential for the Passive House building standard. The technical rigor of ultra energy efficiency is often dominated by just that…technical rigor, leaving the connection to context and natural surroundings, aesthetics and awareness of spaces and the lives lived in them as after thoughts…if thought about at all. To capture all of these considerations in a project is no simple task and goes far beyond building science and is what Architecture is really about…in any building type. The question of whether Passive House or Net Zero is the appropriate path for our future is still up for grabs. To only “building to code” is an expensive proposition and a liability for the future market value of the building whether your heating or cooling. Nice project NK Architects.

Studio III architects’ Hero Wednesday: The Haas Brothers

Well, they look just like…some dudes you might have gone to school with…or know from somewhere.  But they are among the most creative and successful artists of today. What’s more important and the real thrill is their thinking about what they do…making things and their creative process.  How and why we make things, express ourselves and lend meaning to the world is something that architecture and architects struggle with constantly so it’s refreshing to hear someone talk about a rigorous process of exploring creative possibilities, the nature and character of materials the reason and science…coupled with creative free spirit and will to look beyond.  Its open and closed at the same time…scientific and intuitive…unbridled by convention and expectation…and really making a splash in the fashion and art world.

And what fuels creative minds?…who do they hang with?, where do they go? what do they “see”???….”..what are they building in there?…” as Tom Waits said.

Studio III architects’ Hero Wednesday: Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, with Digester Eggs!

It’s not a terribly glamorous subject, and frankly one we are taught to avoid….its “Disgusting” and rife with “harmful germs”…..are ya pickin up what im layin down here?  Yeah, our “waste”, and the waste from our tables and month old refrigerator….and the cigarette butts, bottles and wrappers that are washed “away” with the next storm.  But where is away? And have you heard, “away” is catching up to us.  We gotta deal with it AND do it fast and intelligently.  You’ve no doubt heard the statistic of “ the majority of jobs that will be available to your kids haven’t been invented yet” ? well this is one of those imaginings….in existence and working to deal with our waste, put clean water back in our municipal systems and save the environment and us from ourselves. Yeah, I’m on a bit of a rant, but this project exemplifies the type of Action and RETHINKING of our ways that is imperative for our future.  Never mind the next billion dollar tax payer funded stadium, your regional Digester is where the money NEEDS to be spent…and yes, they should look great too!  Waste is going to be an essential commodity…..and with that I give you the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, with Digester Eggs!  ….really cool, really important!

Studio III architects’ Hero Wednesday: CHANCE

We, no doubt, spend most of our lives preparing for something whether we know it or not, be it school, our work, parenthood, sports, reading, …being….
A huge and mostly invisible aspect of our lives and what we become…or don’t become is….chance.
The Artist is our culture’s mechanism for looking at ourselves. The artist is one way we we can ask the unanswered questions of life…like what role has chance played in my life?…how did I get here?…my god what have I done?! (sorry couldn’t resist the Talking Heads’ David Byrne quote)

Christian Boltanski, one of the most famous artists of our time, has an exhibit in Sydney Australia that attempts to make YOU think about chance, destiny, time, and the events of your life….”what if”, suggests that anything is possible, or at least an endless deep sea of questions…or not. What does it do for you? Check out the videos and article!
